I'm looking for a new tractor. Having trouble deciding. It is down to a JD 5103 w/FEL&JD med duty mower, 18,500.00, or a Mahindra 3525 w/FEL& a howse heavy duty mower, 13387.00. The Mahindra lists as having heavier lifting capasities both at the 3pt and fel, although it is 15hp less. It seems like it is a nicely built machine, only a 100lbs less than the deere. How can it lift that much more while being that many less HP? I think they're both Inian tractors, so which one? Thanks in advance, MP

There are different ways to measure lift capacities so you can't always do a direct A-B comparison. There are lots of factors that can limit lift capacity - size of hydraulic cylinders, hydraulic pressure and flow, front axle capacity, ballasting, tire weight ratings, etc. Often a loader can lift more than the published ratings, but the manufacturer knows that something may get overloaded if it does. If the tractor can lift everything that fits in the bucket that's usually all you need. ....

I have to admit that I am partial to JD, but the thing I always tell people is to think about resale value, dealer support, and parts availability and pricing. John Deere is a huge company that has been around forever. They have dealers everywhere and parts are almost always available overnight. Resale value on deere is second to none. All of this is not to say the Mahindra is not a good tractor, but if it breaks, do you know how long it takes to get parts or what the prices of those parts might be? You might call both dealers and ask about price and availability of some common repair parts. Maybe a clutch assembly, muffler or axle bearing for instance. You might be surprised. Also, I can guarantee you that the john deere will be worth at least $5000.00 more if you want to trade it in after 5-10 years. I am sure either tractor could be good performers and you also need to look at which one is comfortable to operate and controls are laid out that they are convenient for you. These are questions only you can answer. ....

Ken is correct the JD lists the 3pt as 3050 lb 24" behind the lift point. The Mahindra lists it as 3525 lb, probably at the pins.
I am not sure about the FEL. One is an old Deere design the other is likely an old IH. I am not sure what old model IH or Deere. The 5500 is more comparable tractor the Deere.
I believe you could get a Kubota M4800 for about the same price here as the Deere. It is a more modern tractor.
I would think you would want wet brakes if you are doing a lot of FEL work. The Mahindra has dry brakes. ....

JD, I live in Houston, where mihindra is based out of (Tomball TX, about 15 miles), so I'm thinking parts won't be too much of a problem. As far as resale, I realize the mihindra won't pull as much resale value, but it also is 5000 less to start with. My wifes 1st cousins actually own the deere dealerships here in houston, so I tend to want to go with them, but keeping an extra 5 grand in the bank is appealing also. The mihindra looks like it will do the work, JD has the reputation.

Ok, I'll butt in here with my $.02. According to your post, the Mahindra is 15 hp less than the deere. To me, that 15 hp could be worth $5k especially if the Mahindra lacks the power to run the mower the way you want it to. I'd take a very serious look at the size of mower and the conditions you plan on using it. You'll need more power if you are going through thicker stuff.
Just a few pennies of thought. I'm not familiar enough with Mahindra to comment further. But there's nothing worse than looking back and saying I shoulda gone with the more power because it's gonna cost you even more to fix the mistake. ....

I think some of the Mahindra tractors are good. My Cub-Cadet, which I like, is basically the same as one of the Mahindra models. I feel the Mahindra line is good in the smaller popular sizes where parts, etc., will be available in the US because of sales levels. In the model size you are talking about I would think that sales are few and far between. Parts and resale will be a problem. My local JD dealer attempted to sell the small to mid size CUT's for those customers interested in saving a few bucks. They even had some parts availablilty issues with popular models and are dropping the line. I'd go with the Deere without hesitation! ....
